A Wife's Journey

A Monthly Column By: Dianna Auton

Each month Dianna will share her journey as a Christian wife. She will share her personal thoughts in a unique way, and share with us her insights and observations about marriage and being a wife..

The Nasty “S” Word

Okay these are just some thoughts that I have been thinking through lately. It’s about that word that wives just hate to hear… Submission. Yuck…. Do we have to do that… Well in two places in the New Testament it talks about wives being submissive to their husbands. “Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.” (Eph 5:22 NKJV) and “Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.” (Colossians 3:18 NKJV). Interesting isn’t it. Almost identical in wording. I decided to look these two verses up in the Amplified to see if there are any differences besides “to” and “is fitting”… Here is what I found.

Ephesians 5:22 (AMP) “Wives, be subject (be submissive and adapt yourselves) to your own husbands as [a service] to the Lord.”

Colossians 3:18 (AMP) “Wives, be subject to your husbands [subordinate and adapt yourselves to them], as is right and fitting and your proper duty in the Lord.”

Okay these two verses in the amplified tell us that we are to be subject, subordinate and adapting ourselves to our husbands. They also say that this is a service to the lord and it is our proper duty in the Lord.

Let’s look up the word Submit

Submit:

1 a: to yield oneself to the authority or will of another : SURRENDER
b: to permit oneself to be subjected to something <had to submit to surgery>

2: to defer to or consent to abide by the opinion or authority of another

Isn’t that interesting. Isn’t that the very thing we do when we give our lives to Christ. We surrender ourselves to God. We are permitting ourselves to be subjected to His presence. We are consenting to abide by His authority. It’s the parallel between wives of men to being the bride of Christ to be forever bound by Him. So if we as wives can submit our entire being to Jesus Christ then it shouldn’t be too hard to submit ourselves to our husbands. I mean that is one thing our Savior has asked us to do. If we can submit to abide by how God wants the world to run we can do that.

Now I am not saying we are too let our husbands just run over us and do whatever they want. God put us with our husbands to give good Godly counsel, to comfort, encourage and support. Most husbands will be willing to hear what you have to say if said with the right heart and attitude. All I’m saying is that it shouldn’t be so difficult for us to be submissive to our husbands since it is something Daddy has asked us to do.

This months topic is going to be an ongoing topic as the Lord brings it to me. I think it is a HUGE area that most wives, including myself, struggle with. I would also love to hear your thoughts about this subject. I may even include a few of them in next months article. If you would like to add something or share something about this topic please email me at: dianna @ wivesoffaith.com

I would love to see your thoughts.

Until next time.

Blessings,
Dianna
